About Elizabeth

ElizabethElizabeth Grandbois, mother of three has worked as Registered Nurse/Nurse Practitioner in health care for 18 years, specializing in Emergency Room Nursing.

In 1997 Elizabeth was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s), a progressive fatal neuromuscular disease. With no treatment available and limited public understanding, she set out on a tireless campaign to raise the profile of the disease.

She rallied politicians, corporations, entertainers and the media and with the help of volunteers, founded Elizabeth’s Concert of Hope Foundation. Under her leadership the organization has successfully produced 15 high profile concerts including a National music tour and raised 2.5 million dollars for ALS.

She has presented to the Prime Minister and numerous senior cabinet ministers to secure annual funding for ALS research and protect insurance benefits denied to those diagnosed with catastrophic illness.

Elizabeth is a public speaker, published author and has been the subject of numerous documentaries, notably “Elizabeth's Hope”. She is a member of the Public Awareness Committee( ALS Canada), Vice Chair of the Accessibility Standards Advisory Council (ON) and a member of the Inclusivity Citizen Advisory Committee(Burlington, ON).

Elizabeth has received a number of awards including the Queens Jubilee Medal (Canada),Therese Casgrain Volunteer Award(Canada), Meritorious Service Medal (Canada), Terry Fox Hall of Fame (CFPDP), Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship, the Outstanding Achievement Award (Ont), Paul Harris International Rotary Award, Vocational Community Service Award (Burlington), Woman of the Year (Halton), The Esmond Butler Volunteer Award (ALS Canada), Public Awareness Award (ALS Canada).

Although the shadow of ALS looms she has accepted what she cannot change and while she is able, continues to live life with purpose and passion.

Her current project is a national music tour, “The Mobility Tour” dedicated to providing improved accessibility and mobility for Canadians in need.
